In the first half of 2024, China's gas-fired heavy truck market showed unprecedented vitality and growth momentum, with cumulative sales of nearly 110,000 units, a surge of 104% year-on-year. in July, under the market environment of low freight rates and low revenue, gas-fired heavy trucks still bucked the trend of the ring, up nearly 70% over the same period of the previous year, and a rise of nearly 10% year-on-year. From the macro level, the gas heavy truck market booming thanks to the country's high attention to the efficient use of natural gas and policy support.
Since 2000, China's natural gas market has entered a period of rapid development, and its applications cover a wide range of fields such as urban gas, industrial fuels, transportation, natural gas chemical industry, and natural gas power generation. In order to strengthen the efficient utilization of natural gas and ensure market development and stable supply, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) issued the Natural Gas Utilization Policy in 2007, which was revised for the first time in 2012 to cope with the ever-changing energy market and environmental protection requirements.
With the report of the 20th Party Congress proposing to accelerate the planning and construction of a new energy system and actively and steadily promote the dual-carbon goal, higher requirements have been put forward for the development of natural gas. As a clean energy source, natural gas is flexible and efficient, making it an ideal choice for synergistic development with a variety of energy sources, and continues to play an active role in the carbon peaking and even carbon neutral stages.
In recent years, the development situation of natural gas utilization in various fields has changed significantly, especially in the transportation sector. In order to guide the standardized development of the market, optimize the natural gas consumption structure, improve the utilization efficiency, and promote the economical use, the National Development and Reform Commission, taking into account the current situation, made a comprehensive revision of the "Natural Gas Utilization Policy" and renamed it as the "Measures for the Administration of Natural Gas Utilization", which has been formally put into effect on August 1, 2024 already.
Article 6 of the newly revised "Measures for the Administration of Natural Gas Utilization" clearly states the direction of the priority category of natural gas utilization. It specifically mentions transportation vehicles such as cargo trucks, intercity passenger cars, buses and other vehicles fueled by liquefied natural gas (LNG). This policy direction will have a positive guiding effect on the gas vehicle market, encouraging more transportation vehicles to adopt clean energy, reducing carbon emissions and promoting the development of green transportation.
At the same time, in the perspective of industry experts, the development prospects of gas heavy trucks are also highly expected. In the sixth "Zhiyuan Cup" transportation reputation of commercial vehicles and parts selection activities sponsored by the Transportation Network, China Communications and Transportation Association of Clean Energy Vehicle and Vessel Branch chief expert Yao Mingde in-depth analysis of the "dual-carbon" background of the development of natural gas vehicles. He pointed out that in the medium and long term, the commercial vehicle industry will be in the transition period of coexistence of traditional fuels, alternative fuels, new energy and other sources of energy, and gas trucks will show great potential for development in the field of long-distance freight transportation.
This judgment coincides with the actual performance of the market. In recent years, the continuous dip in gas prices has brought significant economic advantages to gas heavy trucks, attracting the attention of many enterprises and users. At the same time, the automobile manufacturing industry to respond positively to market demand, and continue to launch high-performance, high-horsepower gas heavy trucks new products. In the first half of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued a new automobile bulletin, more than 500 horsepower high-power gas heavy trucks accounted for a significant increase in the proportion of some products even reached 800 horsepower, these products not only to meet the market demand for efficient, powerful means of transportation, but also provides users with more diversified choices, and further promote the prosperity of the gas heavy truck market.
Despite some policy adjustments, such as the Notice on the Implementation of Old Operating Truck Scrapping and Renewal issued at the end of July, which did not include direct subsidies for gas-fired heavy-duty trucks, the stabilization of domestic natural gas supply and demand, as well as the implementation of the newly revised Measures for the Administration of the Utilization of Natural Gas, still provide sufficient momentum for the development of the gas-fired heavy-duty truck market.
