The IAA is the oldest exhibition in Germany. The first IAA was held in Berlin in 1897. In 1947 and 1949, German automobile and parts manufacturers participated in the Export Fair held in Hanover, where the automobile hall attracted audiences like a magnet. In April 1951, the IAA was first held in Frankfurt, attracting 570,000 visitors. Only six months later, another edition was held in Berlin with 290,000 visitors. From the 35th edition onwards, the IAA left its traditional host city of Berlin and returned to Frankfurt am Main, thereafter being held every two years. The 40th IAA in 1961 set a record with 950,000 visitors. In 1989, 2,000 exhibitors occupied 252,000 square meters, and over 1.2 million visitors attended. Given this, the VDA decided to split the IAA into two events: one for passenger cars and parts in Frankfurt in odd-numbered years, and one for commercial vehicles and parts in Hanover in even-numbered years. The highlight of the show is the dedicated display of commercial vehicles, buses, trucks, heavy-duty vehicles, and their parts, providing an international platform for every automobile enthusiast.
